Thousands of Christians took part in Sing Resurrection on Easter Sunday, but, apart from the Sunday after Easter, a group of Christians in Suffolk have continued to sing hymns every Sunday during lockdown. Here Mike Cadman, who coordinates the initiative, explains how it started:
“I lead a small a house group in Beccles Suffolk and a group of us in a cul-de-sac called Meadow Gardens took part in Sing Resurrection. On the Sunday after Easter, we were asked by neighbours why we had not been out singing that morning. As my wife and I prayed about this challenge, we realised that while many churches like ours would be using IT to meet virtually, it would still be good to sing outside and not just disappear to our virtual meetings!
“So we decided to sing on the following Sunday. We wrote letters to the 46 households in the road which included the words of the two hymns we planned to sing. On the day itself, we were able to play the music for them on a loudspeaker. Since then, we have continued to sing Sunday by Sunday. There are about 16 who gather, socially distancing of course, at 9.40am. We actually attend four different churches – Hungate Methodist/URC Church, Beccles Baptist, Ringsfield C of E and Beccles Bible Believers Fellowship. We take it in turns to now choose not two but four hymns! I pre-record them and have a dedicated web page on my website for the day and change the links each week for the new selection of hymns. We also now have a lady who plays for us live on the cornet.”
