The illegal arms trade, behind the international drugs trade, is the world’s second largest criminal activity worth billions of pounds. However, it is not just the illegal arms trade that causes concern.
The arms themselves which range from guided missiles, tanks and helicopters to machines guns and rifles are traded throughout the world, mainly from one of the bigger countries like China, Russia, USA, France and the UK to countries often in conflict. It has been reported that some of the largest purchasers are in the Middles East, South and East Asia.
Within our society, churches can raise the profile of the arms trade and come together to pray for peace and unity in what can be seen as a corrupt industry.

Methodist response to Arms Trade Treaty
Leaders of the Methodist Church in Britain have welcomed the UK Government’s ratification of the Arms Trade Treaty saying it is a “legal milestone that should help to protect those who are abused and oppressed”.
