What was Sing Resurrection?
Easter Sunday 2020 was an Easter Sunday like no other before it. We could not sing the great Easter hymns inside our churches, but we could sing them in this way…
At 10am on Easter Sunday 12 April 2020 we called on all who wanted to celebrate the resurrection to go outside and sing Jesus Christ is Risen Today and Thine be the Glory at the top of their voices! They could be sung…
- in the garden
- in the street
- like an Italian from a balcony!
- on a permitted daily walk in the local park
- by the sea or by a lake
…all of course keeping safe spatial distance.
They could also be included in a live streaming service so that viewers could step outside and sing at the same time.
Why Jesus Christ is Risen Today and Thine Be the Glory?
- They are probably the best loved Easter hymns known by the largest number of people.
- They are cheerful, confident and joyful acclamations of resurrection and will be uplifting for other people to hear on Easter morning.
- Jesus Christ is Risen Today is very ancient based on a 14th century Latin hymn, but reworked in the Lyra Davidica of 1708, so it is an expression of unity and connects us with all those who have gone before us.
- Thine Be the Glory was first written in French (A Toi la Gloire) by the Swiss writer Edmund Budry and connects us with the world wide Church.

Choir of the Nation – Hymn Flash Mob
St Paul’s Cathedral had a similar initiative which we worked alongside.
The cathedral wanted the nation to come together in songs of praise to mark Christ’s entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, and his glorious resurrection on Easter Day, by taking part in a hymn flash mob. The idea was to record yourself singing three chosen hymns at home, which for Easter Sunday include Jesus Christ is Risen Today and Thine be the glory, and then email them to the cathedral. You could then be included in the Choir for the Nation.
