Women representatives from the global campaign Korea Peace Now! Women Mobilizing to End the War have sent a letter to Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un asking them to establish a peace process towards the signing of a peace agreement to end the Korean War and to include women and civil society in that process. This comes as the USA and North Korea are due to hold a summit in Vietnam from February 27-28 2019.
The letter urges the leaders to take 3 steps towards transforming US-North Korean relations:
- Declare an end to the Korean War and a new era of peace.
- Establish an inclusive peace process toward the signing of a peace agreement with civil society participation, especially women’s organizations.
- Normalize relations by a) establishing reciprocal liaison offices; b) lifting sanctions that harm vulnerable individuals; and c) facilitating people-to-people engagement, including reunions between Korean-Americans with their families in North Korea.
The campaigners state that ‘decades of studies have shown, women’s participation significantly increases the probability that a peace agreement will be signed and will last far longer than otherwise. Indeed, peace agreements are 36 percent more likely to succeed when civil society representatives, including women’s groups, meaningfully participate.’
As part of the campaign, supporters are asked to add their name to the letter online.
