A call for negotiations to end the conflict and bring political transition in Syria was made by the World Council of Churches (WCC) and Pax Christi International in a joint statement on 15 March 2016, which marked the fifth anniversary of the conflict in Syria.
The WCC is also supporting a joint appeal for humanitarian access in Syria initiated by the Norwegian Refugee Council and UNICEF, and signed by dozens of humanitarian agencies worldwide.
The appeal is pushing for humanitarian access to go beyond temporary lifting of sieges and checkpoints to allow more aid convoys to move: ‘Humanitarian access and freedom of movement of civilians in Syria has to be sustained… It has to be unconditional. And it should include access to all people in need by whatever routes necessary.’
