Update on MTAG – July 2017

July 21, 2017 By Web Editor

CTBI’s latest newsletter showcases the recent work of the Mission Theology Advisory Group (MTAG), including producing 95 missional theses for the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation on 31st October 2017. MTAG’s are based around the five marks of mission. Each takes the form of a positive statement: ‘We believe in a Church that..’ They will be tweeted, one a day in a randomised order, from @95missiontheses from 28th July 2017.

Professor John Drane has reflected on the spirituality of #onelovemanchester, following the terrorist attack at the Ariana Grande concert. In the video above, John says that ‘such outflowing of pain in a deep way reflects the spirituality of our culture’ and that ‘from a Christian perspective they highlight some key challenges and opportunities in relation to our understanding of what mission might be like in Western cultures in the twenty first century’.

MTAG’s work with the Social Responsibility Network (SRN) on the relationship between mission and social action has resulted in a discussion paper Visible Discipleship: Re-imagining Social Responsibility for Today’s World. The report challenges us to think about the mission of the church for the common good and features MTAG’s five themes for a new theology of evangelism.

What does it feel like to say ‘I do NOT love my neighbour’? MTAG now has a new set of resources in its Social Engagement and Evangelism range (SEE) which addresses startling issues like this following research done after the Brexit vote. Resources specific to Brexit are Starting a Conversation, Speaking and Listening Truth, Working against Racism, Remembrance and Being ‘Nice’.

The newsletter also looks at the Ely Science Festival, organised by MTAG’s Vicky Johnson, ‘an amazing feast of faith and science with talks, exhibitions, activities and even featured a dalek-sidesperson!’
