Syria/Turkey Earthquake appeals and responses

Christian aid organisations and churches are responding to the earthquakes that have hit southern Turkey and north-west Syria. The Disasters Emergencies Committee (DEC)  estimates that over 35,000 people have been killed, with many more injured.

Emergency Appeals

All We Can (Methodist relief and development)

All We Can’s response is centred in Syria, with access to existing networks for the most vulnerable through partners in the region. Appeal

Aid to the Church in Need (ACN Ireland)

ACN has released €500,000 in emergency aid to respond to the situation in Syria and is in continuous contact with its partners. Appeal

CAFOD

CAFOD is a member of DEC and is appealing for donations to help provide urgent food, water and shelter to survivors of the earthquake.

Christian Aid

Christian Aid is a member of DEC and the Irish Emergency Alliance and has appeals to support the local response to the earthquakes:

Christian Rebuild (Congregational)

Christian Rebuild has long-standing relationships with Christians in Aleppo and they are in desperate need of help to pick up the pieces. Appeal

Church of Ireland Bishops’ Appeal

Bishops’ Appeal for World Aid and Development immediately released €10,000 from its reserves to Christian Aid for its work in the area, and is encouraging parishes to contribute to this appeal in support of Christian Aid.

Embrace the Middle East

Embrace the Middle East has an appeal to support partners to get vital aid and immediate support (including blankets, mattresses, medicines, cooking utensils, food parcels, water) to those affected by the devastating earthquakes.

SCIAF

SCIAF says it has sent £30,000 of initial support to provide emergency food, shelter and medical supplies through local partners in the area. It has launched an appeal to prevent further deaths and help survivors.

The Archbishop of Dublin, he Most Revd Dr Michael Jackson, commented ‘News of successive earthquakes happening in Turkey and in Syria have filled us all with sadness and a sense of helplessness at the plight of hundreds of thousands of people throughout the region and this also includes the peoples of Cyprus and Lebanon.’

Rt Rev Dr Greenshields, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, said the Church of Scotland held everyone affected by the terrible tragedy in prayer and extended condolences to all those who have lost loved ones. Full statement

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, is calling on Anglicans around the world to pray for all those affected by these catastrophic events and to support relief efforts. Full statement

Rev David Nixon, President of the Methodist Church in Ireland, commented ‘We have been horrified and saddened to see the devastation in Turkey and bordering Syria following the earthquakes.
