A demonstration in London on Saturday 27 February 2016, opposing the renewal of Britain’s nuclear weapons system, is being supported by the Baptist Union, the Methodist Church, the Church of Scotland and the United Reformed Church (URC).
The four denominations have been actively opposed to the renewal of Trident for some years now and signed an interfaith statement last year saying that the use of nuclear weapons, “violates the principle of dignity for every human being that is common to each of our faith traditions”. The Baptist Union of Great Britain, Methodist Church and URC, along with the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), also made a submission in 2011 to the BASIC Trident Commission, an independent, cross-party commission to examine the United Kingdom’s nuclear weapons policy and the issue of Trident renewal.
