‘From Sam Sharpe to Black Lives Matter: The Continued Struggle for Black Agency and Self-Determination’

Professor Anthony G Reddie is the Director of the Oxford Centre for Religion and Culture in Regent’s Park College, University of Oxford. He is also an Extraordinary Professor of Theological Ethics and a Research Fellow with the University of South Africa. He has a BA in History and a PhD in Education (with theology) both degrees conferred by the University of Birmingham.
His latest book is Intercultural Preaching, co-edited by Seidel Abel Boanerges with Pamela Searle. He is the author of Theologizing Brexit: A Liberationist and Postcolonial Critique (Routledge, 2019), the first intercultural and postcolonial theological exploration of the Brexit phenomenon. His previous book was Journeying to Justice, co-edited with Wale Hudson-Roberts and Gale Richards (Paternoster Press, 2017). For full speaker details, please see the Baptists Together website.

The Sam Sharpe lectures seek to broaden and advance the legacy of Sam Sharpe by exploring subjects in mission, race, class, and injustice.
Sam Sharpe was hanged in Montego Bay on 23 May, 1832 after initiating and leading a revolt for justice. Just before his execution he said: ‘I would rather die upon yonder gallows, than live in slavery.’ The revolt and Sharpe’s actions played a huge role in British parliamentary deliberations, and ultimately the Slavery Abolition Act in 1833. It is this legacy the Sam Sharpe Project seeks to build upon by promoting his story and exploring his relevance in today’s context. The Sam Sharpe annual lectures, an idea conceived by Rosemarie Davidson-Gotobed, a Partner of the Sam Sharpe Project, remains its key educational resource.
