About the report
Discussing the report at the United Reformed Church (URC) General Assembly in July 2016, the Revd Nicola Furley-Smith, Moderator of the URC’s Southern Synod, said ‘New ecumenism brings churches together in common action, whereas the old ecumenism aimed to unite churches in common structures.’ Cumbria is an example of good ecumenism which ‘enables practical unity in witness and evangelism’, said Nicola. She reported that Cumbria’s model is being explored elsewhere.
The group responsible for the report wrote it with local churches in mind: it includes questions for reflection and Bible passages to study with the aim of helping churches discern what the Spirit is saying about ecumenical ministry.
