How has austerity affected Christian engagement with poverty and what are the theological motivations which underpin it?

Church Action on Poverty is partnering with universities in a major new three year research project to explore this question. The organisation says it is the first evidence-led academic theological analysis of the impact that austerity has had on the Christian engagement with urban poverty.

It aims to facilitate the development of:

  • Better informed government policy
  • More effective faith-based activism
  • Reductions in urban social exclusion and inequality

Partners

  • Dr Chris Shannahan, Research Fellow in Faith and Peaceful Relations at the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations at Coventry University.
  • Professor Robert Beckford, Professor of Theology and Culture in the African Diaspora at Canterbury Christ Church University.
  • Professor Peter Scott, Samuel Ferguson Professor of Applied Theology & Director of the Lincoln Theological Institute at the University of Manchester
  • Dr Stephanie Denning, Research Associate at the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations at Coventry University.
  • Church Action Poverty, a national ecumenical Christian social justice charity, committed to tackling poverty in the UK.

Resources

From 2018-2021 the project will be producing resources including animated videos on faith and poverty, reports, policy documents, and resources for churches and groups responding to poverty.
