As a prelude to the Racial Justice Advocacy Forum webinar ‘Setting Us Free‘ on 21 March 2022, Richard Reddie, Director of Justice and Inclusion at Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (CTBI), has written an article for Premier Christianity looking at the damage caused by 400 years of slavery to Black Christians and how we might repair it.
Richard provides an overview of ‘undoubtedly one of the grimmest episodes in human history’, describes how European missionaries used the Bible as part of a ‘dehumanising and brainwashing process to justify not only Black enslavement, but Black inferiority’ and how the Black Lives Matter movement can be traced directly to African enslavement, when Black lives were cheap and disposable.
More positively, Richard touches on how Jesus Christ has the capacity to free both the body and mind, which the forthcoming webinar will look at in more depth.
