Give Me Five child poverty campaign launches

August 30, 2017 By Web Editor

Give Me Five campaignThe Give Me Five campaign, asking the Scottish Government to increase child benefit by £5 a week per person, officially launched at the Conforti Institute in Coatbridge on 30 August 2017.

Backed by the Church of Scotland, Bishop William Nolan of the Catholic Church’s Justice and Peace Commission and organisations such as the Child Poverty Action Group in Scotland, Poverty Alliance and Children 1st, the campaign aims to raise 30,000 children out of poverty.

‘In Scotland, latest figures show that 260,000 children are in poverty today. This is not a problem identified in another country or in a far distant time period. This is Scotland in 2017’, said Right Rev Dr Derek Browning, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. ‘We want the Scottish government to act and to be more ambitious in dealing with the causes of child poverty. The Scottish government has the power to make a difference’, he said.
