More than 20 million people are at risk of famine across a number of countries including North East Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, and Yemen, adding to the list of current crises in countries such as Syria and Iraq.
While East Africa is in the third year of drought, conflict is causing or exacerbating the problem in some areas.
‘We stand at a critical point in history. Already at the beginning of the year we are facing the largest humanitarian crisis since the creation of the UN’, said UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, Stephen O’Brien.
