Updated 19 February 2020.

Churches and Christian organisations have been concerned for years about growing levels of personal debt and the disproportional effect this has on the poor in various ways.

The following linked resources may be useful to find out more about debt.

Just Finance Foundation

This is the Archbishop of Canterbury’s initiative to create a fairer financial system aimed at serving the whole community, providing everyone with access to responsible credit, savings and essential financial services. It will use the national and grassroots resources of the Church of England to support the growth of credit unions, community finance organisations and local financial advice services. It was originally called #TOYOURCREDIT.

Churches’ Mutual Credit Union

A mutual society, savings and loans co-operative owned and controlled by its members. It was formed in a collaboration between the Church of England, the Church of Scotland, the Methodist Church of Great Britain, the Church in Wales and the Scottish Episcopal Church. In July 2016 it was extended to include eligible members of the United Reformed Church and from January 2017 eligible members of the Catholic Churches in England and Wales, and Scotland were included.

Christians Against Poverty (CAP)

Started in 1996 by John Kirkby, CAP runs a number of free local services including debt help, job clubs, life skills and fresh start.

Stewardship

A Christian financial support services charity.

The Money Charity

A national money education charity.

Christian Council for Monetary Justice

An open forum which seeks to make people more aware of the pertinence of faith to the economic order.
