CofE joins call for nuclear disarmament

A motion calling on the UK Government to restate its commitment to the principles of nuclear arms control and eventual nuclear disarmament has been backed by the General Synod of the Church of England.

The Church of England joins the Baptist Union, Catholic Church, Church of Scotland, Free Churches Group, Methodist Conference, Quakers and the United Reformed Church in its opposition to nuclear arms. These churches called on the UK government to add its support for the United Nations (UN) Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons back in December 2017. An amendment at the Church of England General Synod calling for the UK Government to sign the UN treaty was however defeated. There is a report on the Synod debate in the Church Times.
