A new project, called the Clewer Initiative, dedicated to mobilising churches to end modern slavery in the UK was launched on 17 October 2017 at Lambeth Palace.
It is a three year project led by the Church of England with partners including the Anglican Alliance, Salvation Army, Santa Marta Group, Freedom Sunday and Stop the Traffik. It aims to ‘enable Church of England dioceses and wider Church networks to develop strategies to detect modern slavery in their communities and help provide victim support and care’. It is funded by the Clewer Sisters, an Anglican order of Augustinian nuns founded in 1852 to help marginalised, mainly young women.
The launch included a welcome by Bishop Alastair Redfern, the Bishop of Derby, and speeches by the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner, Kevin Hyland, and the Minister for Crime, Safeguarding and Vulnerability, Sarah Newton MP (available via Soundcloud below).
