New book by Canon Hyland
Church of Ireland Publishing has announced the publication of a new book by Canon Cecil Hyland. Journeying in Faith – A Walk with Christ will be launched by the Bishop of Limerick, Killaloe & Ardfert in the Music Room of Christ Church cathedral, Dublin, on Monday 11 December at 5.30pm. Cecil Hyland, who was ordained in 1963, served curacies in Belfast and Dublin before returning to Belfast in 1967 as Church of Ireland Youth Officer. Six years later he was appointed Dean of Residence in TCD and subsequently served as Rector of Tullow and Rector of Howth before his retirement from the stipendiary ministry in 2005. In addition he has been the Dublin and Central Director of Ordinands, a member of the Dublin Diocesan Synod and General Synod, a member of the chapter of Christ Church cathedral, and has been involved in theological and adult education and the ministry to retired clergy. This wide experience, together with his palpable integrity and substance that commands respect and attracts devotion,
suggests that his book, described by the Revd Ted Woods as ‘an accessible introduction to the Christian faith’ will be a valuable resource for those who wish to ‘establish a connection between what is said and what is experienced’.
More immediately, on Thursday evening in St John’s Hall, Helen’s Bay, Does Christ Matter? An Anglican and a Jesuit in Dialogue, by Canon Timothy Kinahan, Rector of Helen’s Bay, and the Revd Brian Lennon SJ, will be launched. The authors are founder members of the Inter Church Group on Faith and Politics. Their book has been published by Messenger Publications at €12.95/£11.
Today
(Saturday) the Mothers’ Union is organising an All Ireland Prayer Vigil as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence initiative.
All are invited to the Church of St John the Baptist, Clontarf, at 11 am, to call for an end to all forms of violence against women and girls. The Armagh Robinson Library and No. 5 Vicars’ Hill will be open for Armagh’s annual Georgian Day, at 4pm there will be Evensong in St Patrick’s Cathedral and tomorrow (Sunday) there will be an organ recital at 4.15 by NykkÖ–Mickaël Grégoire.
In St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, the annual Swift Symposium will be held in the Deanery and tomorrow (Sunday) the speaker at the Swift Commemoration at Evensong will be Fintan O’Toole.
Tomorrow
(Sunday) afternoon at 3pm Quatuor Voce, in association with Music Network, will give a convert in Abbeystrewry parish church, Skibbereen. In the evening at 7pm St Fin Barre’s Cathedral Choir will launch its new CD ‘A Night Full Of Promise, Carols from St Fin Barre’s Cathedral’. In Christ Church Cathedral at 8pm there will be a concert in aid of Dublin & Glendalough’s Diocesan Refugee Housing Appeal. The concert will feature Discovery Gospel Choir and High Hopes Choir. Admission to the concert is free but donations are invited towards the appeal.
On Monday evening at 6pm in the Music Room of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, the final candlelit film evening of this series will feature Gattaca, a 1997 vision of future society driven by genetic engineering. The film will be introduced by Dr David McConnell, Professor of Genetics in TCD.
Next Friday at the Spirit of Cork Award Dinner at the Clayton Hotel, the Bishop of Cork, Cloyne
& Ross will be presented with the Spirit of Cork Award 2017, only the third ever recipient of the award.
