Advent and Christmas 2022

Resources are available for Advent and Christmas 2022, including the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, and those from a wide range of churches and Christian organisations. Plus there is material from previous years: A World in Waiting – Advent hope in an economic crisis and Advent Journey with the Magi.

Bible Society

 
The Bible Society has Christmas resources to help share the story of Christmas with your family, church and community. These include a brand new children’s booklet, Amazing Days: The story of the very first Christmas, featuring Bob Hartman stories, with illustrations by Amy Lane. There is also a video animation of Amazing Days which can be shown at a church Christmas service. Plus, there’s an ‘energetic script’ for an Instant Nativity – a fun and interactive, rehearsal-free nativity to perform in your church.

CAFOD

 
CAFOD’s 2022 Advent Calendar with a daily reflection and prayer should be available soon.

CAFOD has also produced an Advent calendar and resources for young people. There is also an Advent liturgy to use in class or for a year group and a reconciliation service suitable for all seasons.

Church of England

 
The Church of England has produced branding for resources to invite your community back to church this Christmas, returning to the popular Follow The Star theme. It will be developing new resources for 2022 which will work alongside material from previous years, with a focus on The Great Invitation – encouraging everyone to share the joy of gathering together to celebrate the birth of Jesus with their family, friends and neighbours – especially after two years where this has been impossible for many.

Christian Aid

 
This year’s appeal from Christian Aid aims to give a gift of love to help lift families in Malawi out of hunger. Christmas Worship resources are also available, in English and Welsh, with sermon notes, PowerPoints and prayers for Advent.
 

 

Christian BSL

 
Christian BSL provides British Sign Language (BSL) translations of Christmas carols and for words and phrases related to Advent and Christmas. The videos are presented by Deaf BSL users who are practising Christians.
 

 

Church of Scotland

 
This year’s Advent calendar from the Church of Scotland has the theme of ‘Prepare the way for the Lord’. Other resources for Advent are within its Weekly Worship resources, based on the Revised Common Lectionary, for November and December 2022.
 

 

Doorstep Carols

 
An initiative to get everyone singing Christmas carols on their doorstep at 6pm on Wed 14 December 2022. It was started in 2020 to help spread some cheer during the Covid-19 pandemic and was broadcast on 35 local radio stations and covered by TV stations and the national press. Words and sheet music are available to download.
 

 

Eco-congregation Scotland

 
Eco-congregation Scotland has produced a series of four varied and challenging reflections, called Last Things First,  giving ‘an alternative – but valid – view of familiar Advent (Lectionary) Readings’. There is also a series of daily short reflections.
 

 

Embrace the Middle East

 
Embrace the Middle East has made available a bilingual Welsh/English version of its Bethlehem carol sheet as a free digital download. It includes 8 popular carols with bilingual translation, 6 Welsh language carols and 2 English language carols. Download from Embrace the Middle East.

This year’s GoHealth Waiting Well Advent journey invites you to wait hopefully and with others as we deepen our faith and wisdom this holy season. Each day there will be an email full of inspiration and practices written for 2022, augmented with wisdom from spiritual leaders of today and of the past. Hope

 
Hope has produced another glossy give-away Christmas magazine to hand out to friends, neighbours and your local community this Christmas. It’s intended to be a conversation starter and gentle introduction to faith, with celebrity features, real life articles, quizzes and competitions.
 

 

Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference

 
The Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference is hosting an interactive digital Advent Calendar on its website. This year’s Advent calendar will offer resources for school, parish and home and will be accessible behind a virtual door that, as per tradition, can only be opened on each day of Advent. Joint Public Issues Team (JPIT)

 
With the cost of living rapidly rising in the UK and a lack of support for those who need it most, millions of people are at risk of being pushed into poverty by a difficult winter. Around the world, the twin challenges of climate change and covid recovery mean that many countries already struggling with high levels of poverty are being held back from development. JPIT has invited seven contributors from across its denominations to respond to God’s promise to ‘fill the hungry with good things’. Drawing from their context, they’ve produced resources to be used in churches this advent to explore our calling to share Christ’s light in the darkness.
 

Methodist Church

 
‘There is Room’ is the Methodist Church’s 2022 Advent and Christmas campaign. It seeks to demonstrate the Methodist Church as an open, welcoming and inclusive place for all. Resources are available to download.
 

 

United Reformed Church (URC)

 
The United Reformed Church (URC) is publishing Advent stories featuring local URCs that are helping their communities and reminding us all of the true meaning of Christmas. Find them on social media with the hashtag #AtTheHeartOfYoURCommunity and on the URC website.

‘Advent Journey with the Magi‘ provides a reflective spiritual journey into the mystery of the Incarnation which travels towards Jesus through the eyes of the Magi. It includes sections on Stars, Travels, Gifts, Meeting Herod and Meeting Jesus.
