Panel discussion: a new social contact

Loss and Damage “What we owe each other?”

We need a new and ambitious social contract for people and the planet to deliver a prosperous future for all. The Covid pandemic has shown us what happens when our leaders fail to act in a timely fashion. Building on the momentum of the G7 and the fact that the UK Government is hosting COP 26, this event is an opportunity to explore what a new social contract for people and the planet should look like, with a particular focus on the ‘loss and damage’ agenda.

People living in poverty and at the forefront of the climate crisis must not end up paying twice. The discussion will identify how those who consume most – states, businesses and individuals – can and should contribute their fair share to future sustainability.

With growing climate loss and damage, we need to show solidarity with vulnerable peoples and the most climate-vulnerable countries. Rather than a race to zero, we need a race to resilience that secures an ambitious ‘solidarity package’, ensuring that low-income and climate-vulnerable countries not only survive but thrive.

Panellists
  • Keynote: Anne Marie Trevelyan, UK International Champion on Adaptation and Resilience for the COP26 Presidency
  • Archbishop Julio Murray, Archbishop of Central America
  • Fatuma Mohamed, Power Shift Africa
  • Julie-Anne Richards, Executive Director at Climate Action Network Australia
  • Avinash Persaud, Adviser to Govt of Barbados
  • Her Excellency Saida Muna Tasneem, Bangladesh High Commissioner in the UK

The panel will be chaired by Christian Aid’s UK advocacy and policy lead Jennifer Larbie.

Organised by Christian Aid, Practical Action, Stamp Out Poverty and Power Shift Africa.
