A book and website have been produced for all Church leaders who want to ‘reduce conflict and discern what Christ wants for his Church in a way that is based on Christian values and that works’.
They are the work of Terence Corkin, former General Secretary of the Uniting Church of Australia (UCA), and Julia Kuhn Wallace, a layperson that has served on the staff of the General Board of Discipleship of the United Methodist Church. While general secretary of UCA, Terence Corkin instigated the consensus model of decision making for assemblies and has subsequently been involved in more work on this process.
Consensus building is a process that makes it possible for a group to reach high levels of agreement on things that matter to them. The end point of consensus building is not to get agreement for its own sake but to give confidence that a community is in tune with what God wants as a decision. It does this by being:
- Biblically based
- theologically sound
- sociologically relevant
- culturally appropriate
- faith-encouraging
