While the Police are failing victims of modern slavery, according to the UK’s Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner in a video by ITV News, the Church could have a significant role in combatting the crime, according to Cardinal Vincent Nichols of the Catholic Church in England in Wales.
‘Human trafficking is a vast international evil network – we have to put other international networks against it and the churches have that capacity’, Cardinal Nichols told ITV News.
Cardinal Nichols also reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s commitment to combating modern slavery in an address given at a service to commemorate the work of William Wilberforce on 12 October 2016.
Cardinal Nichols initiated the setting up of the Santa Marta Group in 2014, which has brought together the heads of national and international police and law enforcement agencies to explore how they can work with the Church to help victims.
